The unfortunate event happened during a performance of ‘Volta’ in Tampa, Florida. The statement from the company says the fall happened while the performer was doing the aerial straps number.

The victim has been identified as a long-time aerialist, Yann Amaud. The company also said that emergency procedures were carried out on the victim, after which Amaud was brought to the nearest hospital for treatment. The performer, however, passed away from the injuries he got from the fall.

Cirque’s president and CEO Daniel Lamarre said in his statement that their entire Cirque du Soleil family is in shock and devastated by the tragedy. He said that the victim has been with the company for more than 15 years and that he was loved by “all who had a chance to know him.”

Lamarre also said that Cirque will give their focus to supporting the victim’s family in the coming days and weeks, as well as their employees especially those in the ‘Volta’ team.

The company also promised to fully cooperate with the authorities for their investigation into the matter even as they also conduct their own internal probe.

Cirque du Soleil has also canceled two scheduled shows today in Tampa.

Volta was previously promoted as “adventurous.” In its website, Cirque states that the show “weaves acrobatics” and “actions sports” into a “melodic score.”

Yann Amaud is not the first fatality of a performance-related death in Cirque du Soleil. In 2016, technician Olivier Rochette, who was also the co-founder’s sonwas just preparing for a performance of “Luzia” in San Francisco when he was hit by a lift and died as a result.
