A flying tire hit a person on GA 400 this morning leaving the victim dead. The bizarre and unfortunate incident happened shortly before 8 a.m. at Northridge Rd.
Sandy Spring police said that a truck was heading northbound when suddenly one of its rear tires flew off, across the median and struck a car which was traveling the opposite direction, southbound.
The driver of the car hit by the flying tire was killed.
Two lanes on each side of the GA 400 are blocked. Police are still on the scene investigating.
It is not clear if the driver of the truck has been arrested or invited for questioning, and if there are charges to be filed, or if the matter will be treated as an accident.
The identities of the victim and the truck driver have yet to be released by the authorities. It is not clear yet how exactly the driver died if the person was hit directly by the tire or any part of the vehicle but the possible impact of which forced the driver to lose control of the wheels. It is not clear if the affected vehicle slammed into something as a result of the flying tire. The police have yet to clarify, too, if the victim died on the scene or was still brought to the hospital.
A post-incident video clip is shown by WXIA-TV showing the traffic situation at the scene of the incident, where the involved vehicles are still there and the two lanes they are occupying remain close to motorists.
