"It's a sort of contradiction isn't it?" Wilshaw explained to BBC's Channel 4. Kevin Wilshaw, a front man for the notoriously anti-Semitic National Front has shocked the world with his recent confession that he is in fact gay… and Jewish. Mr. Wilshaw has disavowed his former involvement with the group and attempts to explain how a gay, Jewish man might become a neo-Nazi. Wilshaw joined the National Front as a teenager and had been a prominent member for the past four decades. Wilshaw was active in National Front and as a speaker for other far right groups as late as this year. His departure comes at the same time as he has finally come out as gay.
He spoke with Channel 4 News in Britain. Wilshaw had been arrested in the early 90's for attacking a mosque and had faced charges as recent as online hate speech charges. Wilshaw explains his mother, maiden name Benjamin, was part Jewish. Wilshaw claimed he had committed violent acts, but only in self defense. During a by-election in Leeds he reportedly smashed a chair over someone's head. National Front had been vocally anti-Gay rights. Wilshaw points out that Martin Webster, a national activities organizer of the Front and skinhead Nicky Crane who were openly gay.

Though he said he never attacked or singled out minorities, he said he had seen it happen.
<quote>“I’d never do that, but I have seen incidents where people were singled out because they were black by a group of people. It turned my stomach, I rejected that, I pushed it to the back of my mind.”</quote>
Wilshaw joined the British Nationalist Party after having been involved with the National Front and also was associated with other groups like the Racial Volunteer Force. Wilshaw is not alone in his journey. Matthew Collins is a former National Front activist and now finds himself working for the group Hope not Hate.

Ironically, Wilshaw seems as devoured by anger and violence as ever.
“I want to do some damage as well, not to ordinary people but the people who are propagating this kind of rubbish – want to hurt them, show what it’s like for those who are living a lie and be on the receiving end of this type of propaganda, I want to hurt them.”
