The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have been consistently warning parents of the dangers from sexual predators using new and upcoming social media platforms and applications for years; and now there's a new case of a vicious pedophile taking advantage of today's tech to fulfill his sickening lust for children.
Authorities from the Federal Bureau of Investigation alongside local SWAT teams say that they've apprehended an employee of the Federal Aviation Administration in Des Plaines after a raid upon his home in Aurora, Illinois.
It required an extreme show of force when riding the house, according to the FBI, because Barnett has dozens of images of himself with high powered weapons on his social media pages.
Richard Barnett, also a Navy Veteran, is accused of posing as a 13 year old boy using the social networking site and application for musical.ly in order to coax young girls from the ages of 9 to 12 into sending him child pornography.
Prosecutors say that he also used the streaming app live.ly where he would pretend to be a young boy who was attested to the girls, enticing them into his sick fetishes to send him videos of their naked bodies using a screen name “davidbanks1014”.
According to Richard Barnett’s Facebook page besides working for the Federal Aviation Administration and being a retired Navy Veteran he's also been employed at the Department of Defense, although the circumstances surrounded his career remain unknown.
Neighbors in the Aurora neighborhood described Barnett as a quiet divorced man who lived alone, and that they were shocked to see Federal Agents descending upon his house.
“Saw the flashing police lights, and opened up the door a little bit and saw a squad car on the lawn, and others blocking his truck in the driveway,” said neighbor Bob Sampson.
“I love kids, two of my kids died of spinal muscular atrophy, so I have a total commitment to kids, and to find this out is very repulsive,” Sampson said.
According to prosecutors Barnett would become angry when the young girls refused to submit to his demand for pornography, often threatening to rape or kidnap them.
Barnett has been appointed a public defender who will represent him Wednesday at the Dirksen Building where he'll face a Magistrate for formal arraignment.
