The Governor of Florida, Rick Scott, declared a state of emergency on Monday ahead of white nationalist speaker Richard Spencer's planned visit to the state. Spencer is scheduled to speak at the University of Florida on October 19 at 2:30 p.m. EST.

Spencer responded to the state of emergency declared by Governor Scott by saying he believed it was just a formality in order for the state to employ the National Guard. It is said in the video that this is standard procedure when preparing for an event with the need for a high level of security.

What we do know for sure is that Governor Scott issued the request at the behest of local law enforcement authorities in Gainesville. The declaration essentially gives control of security surrounding the event to the state allowing them full authority to clamp down on any violence that may arise.

The University of Florida acquired a $10,564 fee for the rental of the property where the event is being held and any security inside the theater but did say they would be unable to provide any additional security prompting the Governor to take action and authorize National Guard to respond through the State of Emergency.
