The University of Tennessee in Knoxville reported today that a rape occurred at a residence hall on the UT campus this past Saturday, according to the UT Police Department.
The suspect has yet to be named by Police and it's believed that nobody has been taken into custody as it's still an active investigation.
UT's own student newspaper, <a href="http://www.utdailybeacon.com/news/rape-reported-in-campus-residence-hall/article_23898e42-b28c-11e7-b0c8-a7ae21aa624a.html">The Daily Beacon</a>, reported Monday afternoon that a female student enrolled at the University of Tennessee notified police on Sunday that she was raped by a male acquaintance in a residence hall.
Jillian Paciello, spokeswoman for the UT Police Department, said the case is an open investigation and no further details are being released at this time, including the specific residence hall where the incident was reported in order to not place fear into the student's minds.
A campus-wide email was sent to each and every student as well as faculty about the incident, according to the Beacon.
The email also was intended to provide all students with information on resources such as the Center for Health Education and Wellness, how to report sexual assault and the definition of consensual sex versus what would be defined as rape or a sex crime.
Back in 2016, <a href="http://www.knoxnews.com/story/news/education/2017/10/06/tennesse-university-campus-crime-sexual-assaults-2016/726989001/">a whopping 22 reports of rape</a> were made on UT's campus, according to recently reported statistics on campus sexual assaults.
Those shocking numbers have led to increases in both training and education efforts to identify victims and apprehended suspects, as well as have led to an increase in reports over the last three years, the University says, as more people are willing to come forward.
While there are cases of women who report rapes or sexual assaults that are falsified, each of the 22 which occurred at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville turned out to be legitimate cases; which is a deafening shock.
