A neighborhood in Douglasville, Georgia has residents on the edge after a child was attacked by a man while waiting at the school bus stop Friday morning.
The attacker is still at large on Sunday as authorities are asking the help of all residents to keep an eye out for the suspect.
Douglasville Police said the attack happened at about 7:30 a.m. A 14-year-old girl was quietly waiting for a bus. The girl then noticed a man walking towards her. The man made eye contact with the girl and something in the look he was giving her made her highly uncomfortable.
The girl then had the quick thinking to turn around and run back towards her home. Capt. Brad Stafford said the man unfortunately decided to follow the girl. The girl managed to get inside her house, but the man was able to follow her inside as well.
At the girl’s home, the man started attacking the teenager by slamming her against the wall. Something saved the girl before more harm could be done to her. As she was falling to the ground, a decorative basket that had some plates in it fell. The victim was able to grab one plate and use it to strike the attacker on the head.
That gave the teen some opportunity to escape from her attacker. The attacker also fled afterwards.
Police are still searching for the man that put a young resident to such an ordeal. Worse things could have been done to the girl if not for her quick thinking, bravery and lucky circumstances like taking hold of one of the felled plates.
The authorities have released a sketch of the suspect. The suspect is also described as a 30 to 40-year-old black male with facial stubble, sideburns and bushy, unkept hair and a missing tooth. He was also last seen wearing a red shirt and yellow jacket with a reflective green cross, dark pants and black shoes with a damaged sole on one of the shoes.
The police also added that the suspect likely has sustained injuries to his forehead from the victim’s act of hitting him with a plate.
The neighborhood is concerned about the safety of everyone, especially of their kids after the incident. The neighborhood is a peaceful one with a close-knit community. Residents say they need to be extra vigilant to ensure nothing of that sort of attack happens again to anyone.
Anyone with information on the suspect and his whereabouts is requested to call the Douglasville Police Department at (770) 920-3010.
