The 8-year-old girl who fell two stories from a carnival cruise on Saturday morning has died from the injuries she sustained from the accidental fall. Miami-Dade Police Department has confirmed the sad news.
Police earlier told local media that the little girl fell at 8:15 a.m. from the cruise ship’s atrium to the lower deck. The accident took place at the Port of Miami. The Miami Fire Rescue first confirmed the unfortunate fall. While the exact distance the girl fell had not been established, the estimate is that it could have been between 25 to 50 feet.
The young child was rushed to a local trauma center and was later reported to be in “extremely critical condition” right after she was checked in.
The Miami Fire Rescue captain shared to local media that they initially responded to the incident on Saturday morning. Rescue workers performed CPR on the girl.
The police are still investigating the matter. It is unclear how the girl fell from the balcony inside the ship’s atrium. It is also not clear yet if the child was left unsupervised by her adult companions at the time.
It is also not clear yet if with the death of the child, there will be charges or accountability on the part of anyone, and of the cruise ship company.
The Carnival Cruise line released a statement following the confirmation of the young girl’s untimely death:
“The ship’s medical team responded immediately and the child was transported to the ship’s medical center. She was subsequently transferred via ambulance to a local hospital. The ship’s command immediately contacted Miami-Dade Police Department which is on site. Our most heartfelt care and concern is with the family at this very difficult time.”
The girl’s family has yet to speak on the matter. Miami-Dade Police said on Saturday afternoon that the ship had been returned to Carnival to “resume normal operations.”
