The Pinewood-Laketop Police Department say that they received a call about a domestic disturbance late last night at a home near Lakeside.
The emergency 911 caller claimed to be the mother of Glenn Southwood Jr., who she said may be intoxicated and had threatened to murder his wife.
Once police arrived at the home they found Southwood clearly intoxicated holding a firearm threatening his wife, at which time they demanded he then surrender.
Glenwood refused to comply with authorities and instead began firing at the officers, striking at least one policeman above the knee.
The Pinewood-Laketop Police then returned fire and Southwood barricaded himself inside of the home forcing the department to call in backup.
Tactical and SWAT teams arrived to the residence who then released a K9 onto the premises but Glenwood owned a Pit Bull who severely injured the K9, forcing the police to then shoot the Pit Bull.
According to the police they later discovered Southwood dead on a side porch of the house, and at this time it remains unclear if he took his own life or if he was killed after succumbing to injuries sustained when police returned fire.
The officer who was shot was careflighted to a Phoenix area hospital for emergency surgery and is now expected to make a full recovery.
The injured K9 is being treated at a nearby Veterinarian but is also going to be okay after some time off duty for healing.
A tragic end to a welfare check call that if the suspect would have just complied; he would still be alive today.
