A sex offender in Washington D.C. has been arrested following threats he made to murder African-Americans at Howard University. 24-year-old John Edgar Rust was previously convicted of "indecent liberties with a child by custodian and aggravated sexual battery" in 2012. Rust made the statements around the same time as the University of Missouri campus in Columbia, Missouri was experiencing racial unrest. A section from Rust's threatening statements, "I left MU [University of Missouri] yesterday because I couldn’t put up with it anymore. I go home to Maryland and what do I see? The same old s*. Turn on the news and it’s always the n* causing trouble everywhere. So I’ve decided. Any n* left at Howard University after 10 tomorrow will be the first to go. And any of those cheapskate n*** who try to get out using the metro will regret that choice real fast."

The statements were brought to the attention of authorities who worked to obtain the IP Address of the user that posted them. They discovered the statements were made from an IP Address assigned to a Panera Bread bakery in Alexandra. The authorities were able to go through the restaurant's router logs where they discovered Rust used several devices on the network at the same time the threats were posted.

Rust faces charges of transmission in interstate commerce of a communication containing threats to injure the person of another which carries a sentence up to 5 years in federal prison.
