The first student to die in the NYC public school system in 25 years was found dead from stab wounds to the chest on Wednesday in his school. Police say the 15-year-old who was killed was stabbed by an 18-year-old suspect who also left another student in critical condition at the hospital. The authorities also say the stabbing seems to be the result of an argument involving the three students that had been escalating over a period of two weeks.

Police recovered the murder weapon at the scene, a 3-inch blade with a 4-inch handle.

School officials confirmed there are no metal detectors and felt the knife would have been detected if there were. Bill de Blasio the Mayor of New York City expressed his condolences, "Our hearts are very heavy right now. My heart goes out to the families who have been affected by this tragedy."

No charges have been filed against the student yet who committed the stabbing and officials have been unable to reach his mother who was in Puerto Rico and has not been heard from since Hurricane Maria. The last murder in a New York City public school was in February 24, 1993 when another 15-year-old student was fatally stabbed in the hallway of his Junior High School in Manhattan.
