Bad Trip: 677 Pounds ($1M) of Mushrooms Seized in Berkeley

Turns out Free Speech week wasn't the only bust in Berkeley recently. Someone must have been planning a fairly large party as 677 pounds of psychedelic mushrooms have been seized in connection with a raid on a growing operation. Estimated street value for the quantity is over $1 Million according to authorities.

The bust, which occurred late Saturday according to Berkeley PD, happened nearly by accident. Authorities were called to the (aptly named considering where the couple will be heading soon) Alcatraz Avenue around 10 PM after receiving calls about a couple experiencing a domestic disturbance. Guess there's something to be said about the danger of bad vibes after all.

When officers arrived to search for occupants, suspects or victims, they found a large-scale psilocybin processing operation. Mushrooms and spores in various stages of growth were featured in plain view along with materials related to drying, storing and packaging the shrooms.

The officers obtained a search warrant and seized the drugs along with over $3,000 in cash. If they'd just kept their ops under cover a few more months or years, the couple could possibly have gone "legit" considering the possibility of legalizing medicinal magic mushrooms which, some studies show, may be beneficial for some persons dealing with treatment resistant depression.
