Law enforcement from the Sioux Falls Police Department as well as the SWAT team have been dispatched to a scene at the downtown public library with reports of an armed gunman inside of a vehicle on the premises.
Police have set up a perimeter around the surrounding areas of the library including shutting down all traffic from 6th and 8th and Main to Dakota.
The library has now been evacuated and police are cautioning all pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area.
According to Police Spokesman Sam Clemens the armed gunman is an alleged parole absconder that is a fugitive from law enforcement.
Clemens said, "He mentioned having a weapon, so we have SWAT and Negotiators dealing with him."
Local news is reporting that police have the gunman barricaded inside of a silver car.
They have a SWAT Bearcat and they have two police cars behind the Bearcat, another police car is surrounding the silver car we think the suspect is in.
