According to Democratic Vice President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton lost in the election because she lacked the clear reason why she was running for president. Also, unlike Donald Trump, Biden admitted that Clinton failed to connect with the voters.
As noted by Biden, who will be replaced by Mike Pence in January following Trump’s inauguration, Clinton never really figured out why she wanted to be the country’s next leader.
Despite the policies that she wanted to enact as president, Clinton lacked the proper political motivation to drive her campaign. Biden said that she may have decided to run only because she saw the opportunity to become the U.S. first female president, just like what Barack Obama did for African Americans.
“I don’t think she ever really figured it out,” Biden told the Los Angeles Times. “And by the way, I think it was really hard for her to decide to run.”
“She thought she had no choice but to run,” he added. “That, as the first woman who had an opportunity to win the presidency, I think it was a real burden on her.”
But, aside from not having the proper reason to run for office, Clinton failed to establish a solid relationship with her voters and even allies. In addition to the controversies that emerged due to the email leaks, Clinton also failed in establishing a connection with the working class of the country.
Trump, on the other hand, made it a point to reach out to these people and assure them of a better life under his administration. For Biden, seeing the stark contrast with how Clinton and Trump related to their voters made him realize that the Democratic Party will lose the election.
“Son of a gun. We may lose this election,” Biden said as he looked back on their campaign. “They’re all the people I grew up with. They’re their kids. And they’re not racist. They’re not sexist. But we didn’t talk to them.”
