This weekend Goldwater reported a Georgia Tech student was fatally shot by police in a 'suicide by cop' like scenario.

The student was holding a small knife and refused to comply with the orders of campus and city police when he began approaching an officer with the weapon. Scout Schultz was shot one time in the heart by officers responding to a call of a person behaving strangely and possibly armed with a gun or knife outside of a dormitory.

A vigil was held Monday night for the student which later erupted into a violent protest. One student said at the vigil, "Scout you will be missed and you will never be forgotten." The family of the victim who was fatally shot by police officers released a statement regarding his death, "On behalf of the family of Scout Schultz, we ask that those who wish to protest Scout's death do so peacefully. Answering violence with violence is not the answer. Our goal is to work diligently to make positive change at Georgia Tech in an effort to ensure a safer campus for all students. This is how we will truly honor Scout's life and legacy. Scout's family respects the rights of those who wish to voice opposition to what they feel was an unnecessary use of force, but they ask that it be done respectfully and safely."

One witness to the protest said, "They sent us to seek shelter, the police department." The same witness, Ammar Hawa, captured a Georgia Tech police cruiser that had been set ablaze on video as it burned out. He described how police clashed with protesters, "The police department was fighting with them actually. I saw some police officers put them in the ground."
