For several weeks now, the fight between Turkey’s President Erdogan and Germany’s Chancellor Merkel has been making headlines in Europe.
As from yesterday, it seems there is another Middle Eastern headline on the way for German press. One that German authorities have quietly kept out of the press.
The Prime Minister of Iraq, Haider al-Abadi, was interviewed yesterday and asked about the faith of ISIS fighters, both foreign and domestic, and given the age and origin of Miss Linda Wenzel, it was sure he would be questioned about her as well.
Allow us to enlighten you. Miss Linda Wenzel is a 16 year old German girl from Pulsnitz, Eastern Germany (the region where Angela Merkel is from as well). She met some ISIS recruiters online, namely a Chechen man whom she later married in Syria, and fled to Iraq to work as an ISIS soldier.
Her ‘husband’ was killed in the fierce fighting whilst defending Mosul and the was employed by ISIS to enforce the strict Islamic dress code for women in the city. You have to imagine the irony of a 16 year old Western girl telling Muslim women in Mosul what to wear.
Given her age and nationality and relative beauty, she became a poster child for ISIS and was featured in many of their “propaganda” videos.
Over the summer she was arrested. as you can see here

You can clearly see the great cheer of the Iraqi soldiers to finally have captured her.
The situation is of course politically charged. Miss Wenzel is still a German citizen, but Angela Merkel will not risk interfering with an election only a week away.
The Prime Minister of Iraq, responded to the fate of Miss Wenzel: “You know teenagers under certain laws, they are accountable for their actions especially if the act is a criminal activity when it amounts to killing innocent people.”
The German diplomats handling the case were confident she would probably be spared the death penalty, which would be hanging in this case, but with these latest responses from the Iraqi PM all that has shifted.
Spiegel Magazine reported that the attorney general opened a corresponding 'formal criminal procedure' against Miss Wenzel.
