George Clooney, who is, and this is safe to say, not the greatest fan of the current White House Administration, did get it right when he played a CIA operative in ‘Syriana’ and was asked about Iran. His character famously said: don’t think for a minute that the Ayatollahs are surrendering one iota of control over that nation.
Ten years later, this is still very correct. Iran may have a President and a Parliament that is elected by its people, but there is one man that everyone still listens to and obeys when it comes to guidance of where the country is headed. His name is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In Iran that is Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
After President Trump said Iran was violating the ‘spirit’ of the nuclear deal, and he is getting ready for a US address at the United Nations, the Ayatollah must have thought that he better speak before Trump does so again.
Khamenei, in a speech to Military graduates (talk of a time and place to address the issue), said: “The Iranian nation is standing firm and any wrong move by the domineering regime regarding the nuclear accord will face the reaction of the Islamic Republic. Today, despite all the commitments and discussions in the negotiations, America’s attitude toward these negotiations and their outcome is completely unjust and amounts to bullying.”
Knowing that as soon as the issue of North Korea is dealt with, the attention of the world stage might turn to his country, Ayatollah Khamenei continued: “The Americans should know that the Iranian people will stand firm on their honourable positions and on important issues related to national interests, there will be no retreat by the Islamic Republic.”
Last month already, the Iranian government said was possible to abandon the nuclear agreement made with the Obama administration “within hours” should the United States impose any new penalties.
We know for a fact that Iran will dissect any word of Trump’s speech at the UN General Assembly this week.
