For the third time in only two years, a teacher from Etowah County, Alabama, has been arrested for being sexually involved with a student.
Mrs Sonya Ann Wilks Bailey, 51, was charged with three felonies. She had been working at the school for over 15 years already. Mrs Baily resigned after the incident came to light.
As well as being the teacher of commerce and information technology, she was an alumnus of Alabama A & M University. having received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business education from there.
Her biography on the school website was taken down but our reporters found that she was the mother of two children and two grandchildren. Her quote in the class yearbook of one of her students read: “I enjoy working with the students of WEHS and trust that they will leave my class having learned something beneficial toward their future.”
The school reacted shortly afterwards with the following statement.
“Mrs. Bailey’s resignation was accepted by the Etowah County Board of Education on Aug. 28,” Alan Cosby, school superintendent, said. “Her resignation was accepted after these allegations came to light. We are fully cooperating with the sheriff’s office and district attorney’s office in this case.”
No details on the identity or the age of the minor were given.
Etowah County is starting to have a bad reputation for this kind of behavior.
In January 2016, another teacher, Miss Andrea Elliot Means, 29, was also arrested for allegedly having sex with a student.
And in February of that same year; Miss Kayla Lynn Hodges from Anniston was arrested, also after being accused of having sexual contact with students. In this last case, Miss Hodges even sent sexual photos and text messages to four high school students.
Quite unusual for a math teacher.
Like Mrs Bailey, both those teachers resigned as soon as the incidents were reported.
