A teacher in Etowah County, Alabama has been arrested and charged with being sexually involved with a student. 51-year-old Sonya Ann Wilks Bailey of Arab is accused of sending sexually explicit pictures and engaging in sexual acts with a student. The investigator in the case, Brandi Fuller, said in a statement "Sonya Ann Wilks Bailey, 51, of Arab, was arrested Monday, August 28, and is charged with one count of a school employee engaging in a sex act with a student, one count of second degree sodomy and one count of second degree rape, all are felonies."

The Superintendent at Etowah County, Dr. Alan Cosby, said "Mrs. Bailey resignation was accepted by the Etowah County Board of Education on August 28th. Her resignation was accepted after these allegations came to light. We are fully cooperating with the Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office in this case." Bailey has been arrested and booked into Etowah County Detention Center with a $60,000 bail. Sheriff Todd Entrekin of Etowah County said, "This type of ridiculous behavior is completely uncalled for by someone who was trusted by the community to teach our kids." As part of Bailey's bond, she has been ordered to cease all contact with the victim and their family as well as report to Community Corrections.
It makes one wonder what kind of sway a person in a position of authority such as a teacher has over a young student. It seems unusual for a young boy to engage in sexual acts with a woman old enough to be his grandmother. This potential for coercion is exactly why such relationships are forbidden and punished severely in many states.
