Indian sect leader Ram Rahim has been sentenced today to 10 years in prison for raping 2 followers in 2002. The guru has been accused of sexually exploiting 35-40 woman and the CBI was able to track down 2 of them and they stuck to their story. The crimes first came to light when an anonymous letter was sent to then PM Atal Bihar Vajpayee describing the crimes. People involved in bringing the crimes to light were later found murdered.

A special CBI court judge, Jagdeep Singh, was assigned to preside over the sentencing of the spiritual guru this Monday. He was sighted arriving to the court hearing at 11:30 a.m. this morning by helicopter. Since the sentencing, riots have broken out in Panchkula and surrounding cities near where the sentencing took place. Gas stations where damaged and even journalists were among those attacked in the ensuing violence.

Over 30 people have been killed in the riots and dozens of properties have been destroyed including trains and buses being lit on fire. Thousands of paramilitary and police have been deployed around Rohtak to brace for the violence. The security forces have been given authority to use lethal force if necessary. Surrounding cities have been set on high alert and curfew has been imposed in some of them.

So far over 900 people have been arrested in connection with the violence, some being charged with sedition and attempt to murder charges. The riots are still not under control and most of Northern India is in turmoil as Rahim is brought to the prison where he will serve his sentence.
