Law enforcement in North Nashville say that man who was working delivering pizzas was shot in the head in early Friday morning.
According to police the shooting happened just after 1 AM during a delivery to a customer near the intersection of Batavia Street and 27th Avenue North.
Investigators say the driver, 40 year old Doniyor Abdumadjidov, was out on a delivery when it's believed that someone attempted to rob him and following the confrontation and was shot in the head.
A pedestrian who happened to be walking past the area shortly after found Adbumadjidov lying in a pool of his own blood.
After that person called 911 the delivery driver was then taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was in critical condition just barely clinging to life.
Authorities also said they have no leads or description of any suspect at this time.
Nashville Metro Police said that Doniyor was employed with the popular locally owned pizza chain New York Pizza, at their Elliston Place location which is open until 5 AM.
The owner of New York Pizza, Adam Payz, says Doniyor came to work Nashville from Uzbekistan, who was hoping to have a better life for his family, with his wife and four children arriving just two months ago.
“I pray to God that he is going to make it,” said Payz. “He has been a great man with us, a great personality and he has been wonderful. I care about his kids with the wife. She is new in town, new in the country first of all.”
Detectives say the person who lives at the address given for a pizza delivery never placed the order, and is not involved in the crime.
It's now believed that someone waited outside or nearby the residence to rob whichever driver would have arrived and the attack was not specifically targeting this deliveryman.
Payz also said that several of his drivers have been robbed at gunpoint, and now some areas are too dangerous to serve at all due to the heavy crime.
‘We are going to set up delivery boundaries now, especially in that neighborhood and further in East Nashville.” Payz said.
Friends and family of Doniyor have set up an official GoFundMe in order to raise money to help the family and with his medical expenses.
Anyone with any information on the suspect or who may have witnessed the shooting is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-74-CRIME.
