A couple in Corbin had a terrible fight where the man choked his girlfriend and struck her on the face. But even worse than the already cruel physical abuse was the deplorable stunt the man pulled: he took his girlfriend’s seven-month-old baby and ran to the woods with the child. He even threatened to kill the innocent baby.
Laurel County Sheriff’s Office reported that 21-year-old Charles Shores fled from a house off Hawk Creek Road and escaped into the woods bringing with him his girlfriend’s baby from a previous relationship. Shores issued a threat that he would kill the baby he kidnapped.
An extensive search and rescue operations by the police led them to find Shores in the woods almost naked except for his boxer shorts. Neighbors discovered the baby abandoned in a nearby ditch. The baby was taken to a hospital for check-ups.
The public also helped the police locate Shores with helpful tips and information.
Shores was arrested by the authorities on Tuesday night. Investigators said he briefly struggled with the arrest. He was charged with kidnapping of a minor, wanton endangerment, assault and resisting arrest. Prior to this, Shores also had three outstanding arrest warrants out of Whitley County.
It is not clear what caused the domestic spat between Shores and his girlfriend. The state of the baby after the short kidnapping incident has yet to be clarified by the authorities.
