A couple in South Philadelphia were found dead last Sunday night. Police say Candido Gonzalez and his 23-year-old girlfriend, Caitlyn Jaje, were found in their apartment on the 1300 block of Federal Street and pronounced dead shortly before midnight. The investigation began when police were called at 11:45 p.m. on Sunday because of a report that Gonzalez and girlfriend were found unconscious. Philadelphia Police Chief Inspector Scott Small said in a statement that "The two people were found by a family member who lives on the second floor. They called police."

Gonzalez was found lying unconscious in one room and Jaje lying unconscious in another. After assessing the scene, police say there were no signs of forced entry but they are certain that they had been assaulted. Both bodies were covered in bruises and blood. Inspector Small also said, "There was blood around both of their bodies. The property appears to have been ransacked." Another source says there was even something around their necks that could have been used to strangle them.
The neighbors awoke to the coroners vehicle and homicide detectives including members of the Philadelphia Police Crime Scene Unit who remained on scene for hours. One neighbor of the victims, Jesus Hernandez, said "I looked out my window and saw the coroner." Gonzalez was a single father. His brother had been killed at the same residence just a few years prior leaving questions of the type of people he associated with. Police have not announced any suspects as of this time.
