The shooting took place on Ridgewood Avenue near the Cypress Hills section just after 4:30 PM today, according to investigators.

New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill says that the 29 year old suspect's mother called emergency 911 saying that she needed help with her son because he had became erratic.

After an officer arrived to the residence the officer then approached the bedroom in the rear of the house, where the suspect fired shots at the officer. The injured officer did not return fire.

Police said he was shot several times in the chest, but fortunately was wearing a bullet-resistant vest which saved his life. One of the bullets did hit his forearm, but the wounds didn't hit any major arteries or blood vessels.

The Mayor and Police Commissioner showed off the vest during a news conference and credited it with saving the officer's life in the time of the shooting.

"This young man was definitely saved by his vest, it made all of the difference here," Mayor de Blasio said.

The 30 year old police officer works out of the 75th precinct and has two years on the force so far, but this is the first time he's had to respond to an incident where he's taken fire.

He was taken to the Jamaica Hospital where Mayor de Blasio described him as being in good spirits.

"He's showing a lot of spirit, a lot of energy," Mayor de Blasio said. "Our officer is going to come through it, he's a brave young man, he's going to come through it."

The suspect was barricaded inside the home when police arrived for backup. Neighbors also described the suspect as an emotionally disturbed man with a lot of problems.

Officers were told the suspect was armed with some type of rifle, what the NYPD refers to as a "long gun."

Once SWAT officers entered the home to subdue the man, they found that the suspect was dead in his bedroom of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

They also recovered two additional guns near the suspect's body, which were taken for evidence.
