Reports from the Austin Police Department indicate that the man, who was in his 30s, died on Sunday morning after being handcuffed by police.

The authorities responded to the call about the man, who has been identified as Chris Givens, 33, at about 6:56 a.m. Saturday morning in the 500 block of Deen Avenue just east of North Lamar Boulevard and south of East Rundberg Lane.

The police were told that the man had overdosed and as a result was showing signs of distress. The Austin Fire Department and Austin-Travis County EMS responded to the unfortunate incident.

Authorities revealed that based on their training, Givens was under the influence of a narcotic or other substance. They said for their safety and that of others at the scene, they handcuffed him.

Givens condition deteriorated after he was handcuffed, and medics had to transport him to the hospital. During the ambulance ride, Givens went into cardiac arrest.
