A charity group has a proposal to help prevent pedophiles from carrying out abuses against their potential victims: the use of child sex dolls instead. Does that make for a sound solution or is it a ridiculous pitch?
Juliet Grayson, chair of Specialist Treatment Organization for the Prevention of Sexual Offending (StopSO), a charity group in the UK which prevents sexual offending through therapy, said the prescription of a child sex doll would be like giving methadone to a heroin user.
Grayson said: “For someone who has an exclusive attraction to children, there is no legal way for them to satisfy their desires apart from masturbating to an image in their own head as they’re not allowed to look at pictures or even draw a drawing.”
A registered psychosexual therapist, Grayson added that he knows of a man who uses two “children dolls”. He said: “He had two and was very happy to use them rather than touching a child. This wasn’t great but better than nothing.”
A former primary school governor identified as David Turner was recently found guilty of importing a life-size child sex doll from China to the UK. The 72-year old will be sentenced in September.
The arrest of Turner make some doubt the proposal of StopSo for children sex dolls solution for pedophiles. Barnardo’s chief executive Javed Khan said that evidence from the National Crime Agency “shows there’s a clear connection between possessing these dolls and a sexual interest in children, with owners being charged with offenses such as being in possession of indecent images of children.”
Jon Brown, head of development at the National Security for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children also gave an opinion against the said child sex dolls proposal. He said: “There is no evidence to support the idea that the use of so-called child sex dolls helps prevent potential abusers from committing contact offenses against real children.”
He added that on the contrary: “And in fact there is a risk that those using these child sex dolls or realistic props could become desensitized and their behavior becomes normalized to them, so that they go on to harm children themselves, as is often the case with those who view indecent images.”
Grayson clarified that she “did not advocate for child sex dolls to be available to the general public” as she expressed concerns also that such could lead to people normalizing the activity. She said that her charity has not performed any therapy using sex dolls, but that she did “not object to trying out the practice in the future.”
Grayson said she wishes for a society where “they can accept that some people are sexually attracted to children and yet remain completely law abiding , and that it is safe for those people to admit their attraction.” Yet she admits it is best not to leave children unaccompanied in the presence of people who admit to having attraction to children.
It remains illegal in the UK to import a child sex doll but it is not illegal to own one. Studies reveal that 2 percent of the UK population has strong pedophilic tendencies and that one in five men was discovered to be equally or more attracted to children when shown adult and child pornography.
