The first inmate to be executed again in Ohio in three years had an all-American junk food request for his last meal: a large cheese pizza with bell peppers and mushrooms, a two-liter bottle of Pepsi and strawberry cheesecake but apparently the condemned pedophile child killer did not have much of an appetite as he sent most of his food back, uneaten.
The request also came with a 10 oz grape juice and a piece of unleavened bread for Communion. But 43-year-old inmate Ronald Phillips sent back eight slices of pizza he had requested. He also refused to touch his breakfast. The breakfast consisted of biscuits and gravy, grits, milk , sweetener, coffee and a juice packet.
Phillips was executed at 10:45 am on Tuesday for the 1993 rape and killing of his girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter, Sheila Marie Evans, in Akron.
Phillips was the first condemned inmate to be executed in Ohio in three years after the U.S. Supreme Court denied his last-ditch attempts to stop his death.
Phillips was only 19 when he committed the horrendous act 24 years ago. He beat the poor little girl while brutally throwing her against a wall and dragging her by the hair.
There were also some controversies that met Phillips’ execution regarding the state’s methods for killing Phillips. Ohio was introducing a new legal-injection method which has been challenged in court before the execution.
Executions in Ohio were halted in 2014 when an inmate, Dennis McGuire, gasped and snorted during an injection of a new drug combination.
Phillips was executed shortly after entering the chamber at 10:20 a.m. The execution lasted 12 minutes.
