Model Gigi Hadid, who co-presented the American Music Awards together with American comedian Jay Pharoah, received many negative comments on social media for her impression of the new first lady Melania Trump. Putting on a fake Eastern European accent and touting her lips as much as she could, Miss Hadid said: 'I love my husband, President Barack Obama. And our children Sasha and Malia,' in a clear dig to the new first lady and the resemblance of her speech to that of Michelle Obama’s.
Social media was quick to react, not only to Miss Hadid’s mocking of the future first lady, but also to her bad presenting style. The skit did not sit well to many viewers as they criticized it as being racist.
Tweet read: ‘I don't understand why Gigi Hadid went in on Melania, was kinda random and was done without class. poke fun at Trump, not his wife?’
‘You have ZERO class!! How dare you "mock" Melania Trump when your own PARENTS are immigrants!! Talk about a hypocrite!’
'Melania Trump is going to the First Lady of the USA. This was the highest form of disrespect possible,' while others demanded that Hadid 'leave the country’.
As cyberbullying is the one topic Melania Trump has pledged to tackle as first lady, the fact that Miss Hadid is not being attacked for criticizing the new first family is rather ironic.
Earlier this month, Melania said: 'Our culture has gotten too mean and too violent. It is never OK when a 12-year-old girl or boy is mocked, bullied or attacked. It is terrible when that happens on the playground and it is unacceptable when it's done by someone with no name hiding on the internet.'
President-elect Trump has not responded to the impersonation of his wife yet, but it is surely only a matter of time.
