Brexit - France To Block Calais Tunnel Till UK Pays $50 Billion Divorce Bill (Video)

As the negotiating timeline becomes shorter and shorter for the UK and the EU to reach a Brexit deal, stances on both sides are getting ever harsher. Whereas the UK politicians talked of ‘knives’ and ‘death,’ French politicians could be heard threatening to close the Dover-Calais channel in case of a no-deal Brexit till the UK has paid up it’s $50 billion ‘divorce bill.’

A UK Cabinet Minister admitted to the tabloids that: “We can spend whatever we want to prepare on our side of the channel, but we are completely powerless to compel the French to do the same, and that is a very serious vulnerability for us.”

The island nation’s only major roll-on roll-off ferry hub is it’s major strategic weak point for dealing with EU trade. Should France decide to install custom controls again, it can create huge delays for UK-bound lorries importing factory parts for ‘just in time’ supply chains such as car factories.

Furthermore, French customs officials could draw a halt to a large chunk of Britain’s food exports from entering France.

The UK government meanwhile considers a listing a possible flotilla of British ships to get goods from Europe in case of a n-deal Brexit, admitting: “There is simply no alternative to Dover for just-in-time manufacturers or food exporters, and they together support a significant number of jobs.”

“It would do northern French a lot of damage too, and really decimate Ireland, but we expect President Macron will initially attempt some heavy disruption in Calais to turn the screw on us to pay up.”

Should Britain leave the EU under a no-deal Brexit, the World Trade Organisation rules would once again apply, meaning that the French could decide to carry out checks on trade across the English Channel, bottlenecking any trade between the EU and the UK.

As the UK is much more dependent on EU imports than the other way round, they could cause immediately problems for the Brits.
