Midterms – 2009 Iconic Couple Kanye West And Taylor Swift Give Voting Advice (Video)

Seeing the 2009 iconic MTV moment when a clearly intoxicated Kanye West stormed the stage to rip the mic from Taylor Swift’s hands as he though her award should have gone to Beyonce, who would have expected that this couple would be giving voting advice for the 2018 Midterms a decade later.

<div style="position:relative;height:0;padding-bottom:75.06%"><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RvaakT52RjQ?ecver=2" style="position:absolute;width:100%;height:100%;left:0" width="480" height="360" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>

And secondly, with Mr. West at that time being an up and coming rapper in an era of Obama and Miss West still in her country hay-day, who could expect the direction that they both went.

<b> Kanye West</b>

Kanye West (or we should call him Ye now apparently) made a statement move two weeks ago when opening the Saturday Night Live concert part of the show wearing a MAGA hat. During his song, he paused to promote what he called ‘free thinking’ and stated that 90% of ‘the media is liberal.’

US President Donald Trump afterward claimed he didn’t see SNL (which also featured Matt Damon as Brett Kavanaugh) but that he had heard ‘Kanye was great.’

On Twitter, where he has about 30 million followers, he regularly praises the current administration and is known to have feuded with former President Obama over his handling of Mr. West’s native city of Chicago.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en-gb"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Like many, I don’t watch Saturday Night Live (even though I past hosted it) - no longer funny, no talent or charm. It is just a political ad for the Dems. Word is that Kanye West, who put on a MAGA hat after the show (despite being told “no”), was great. He’s leading the charge!</p>&mdash; Donald J. Will Mr West’s words have an impact? They may make African Americans think twice as he is a major pop star speaking up (on all issues) for the current administration and blaming the MSM of being one-sided.

Will it matter in the long run? It remains to be seen whether Mr. West is serious about one day running for president as he has claimed in the past.

<b> Taylor Swift</b>

Former country star turned pop star Miss Taylor Swift has stated on Instagram earlier this week that she for the first time ever would give voting advice and urged her 112 million followers not to vote for Ms. Marsha Blackburn, a Republican running for the Senate in the state of Tennessee who was previously endorsed by the US President.

She urged her fans to vote for Democratic candidates instead.

In response, US President Donald Trump told reporters: “Marsha Blackburn is doing a very good job in Tennessee. She’s leading now substantially, which she should. She’s a tremendous woman. I’m sure Taylor Swift doesn’t know anything about her. Let’s say that I like Taylor’s music about 25% less now, OK?”

The young singer had previously abstained from giving voting advice, unlike her peer female global pop stars Beyoncé and Katy Perry who all endorsed Ms. Clinton in 2016. This time she explained to have been moved by Ms. Blackburn’s voting record against LGBTQ, which seems an odd explanation.

Will Miss Swift suffer a backlash for this? Probably not. Her fans (as well as her songs) have shifted from country towards young millennials and thus she simply chooses the side that her (mostly young) followers would choose anyway.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee was clearly miffed by the move though, releasing a statement that said: “If you haven’t heard, multimillionaire pop star Taylor Swift came down from her ivory tower to tell hardworking Tennesseans to vote for Phil Bredesen.”

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en-gb"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/WhatDoYouThink?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#WhatDoYouThink</a> AMAs: Stars like Taylor Swift, Tracee Ellis Ross get political, push voting in midterms <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/BreakingNews?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#BreakingNews</a> <a href="https://t.co/MxZ0C36yyi">https://t.co/MxZ0C36yyi</a> <a href="https://t.co/sWEk6rb05t">pic.twitter.com/sWEk6rb05t</a></p>&mdash; Java EE Trainers (@jeetrainers) <a href="https://twitter.com/jeetrainers/status/1049913702923886594?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">10 October 2018</a></blockquote>

<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

However, Miss Swift can move the Democrats further to the left with her action, urging them to choose more progressive candidates who are ‘liked’ by her younger global fans.

This, in turn, sets up the Democrats for a future choice between progressive of centrists while it at the same time has further urged the Republican base to go out and vote come November.

All remains to be seen.

In any case, let’s revisit this if those two would one day both run for president, as you have to admit that picture would make one hell of a presidential debate for 2024.
