Scottish cancer patient Ms Mandie Stevenson had to delay her bucket list trip to New York as she had accidentally filled out she’s a terrorist on the ESTA arrival form. Only when her VISA-application was refused did she notice her mistake. In the end, it cost the woman a thousand dollars to ‘correct’ her mistake. She’ll arrive in the US one month later than planned.
Before an inhabitant of an EU-member state departs for the US, he or she always has to fill out an ESTA form (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) which is a special quick VISA the US grants to certain ‘friendly’ countries. In this manner, the Europeans don’t have to go through the full visum procedure and enter a US embassy, at least as long as they don’t report anything suspicious on the form. Of course, this is exactly what accidentally happened to Ms Stevenson.
The form asked her whether "Do you seek to engage in or have you ever engaged in terrorist activities, espionage, sabotage, or genocide?" she "believed she ticked 'no' then when scrolling it 'nudged and moved.'"

The US embassy, whom she later visited said it was "the worst box you could have ticked," and Ms Stevenson was told it could take three to five days to be granted the full visa.
She added that they did not seem sympathetic to the fact she has terminal cancer: "I pleaded but they just said 'change your holiday.'"
"I live in 12-weekly cycles because I get scanned every 12 weeks. I book my holidays in very specific times and this New York trip was going to be before I get another set of scan results, so I was really looking forward to it. It was stress I didn't need."
In the end, Ms Stevenson rearranged her travel plans and booked the trip again for next month, costing her more than $1,042.

"A lot of people have said 'how on earth could you do that?' but to me I've done it really easily," she said. "I thought because it was a genuine error it would be quite easy to fix but I was quite wrong."
She's now "happy again and keen to get going" and hopes she will get to see the other places on her bucket list: Canada, Thailand, and (hopefully) meet football star Steven Gerrard.
