Chemnitz, the city that has been seeing anti-immigrant protests for weeks on end now ever since refugees murdered a German man during a city festival, seems to be the theme that German Chancellor Ms. Angela Merkel can’t shake.

Today she will host the country’s intelligence chief, Mr. Hans-Georg Maassen, in the Bundestag (the German parliament) and ask him what he believes happened in Chemnitz a few weeks ago.

Mrs. Merkel will want to examine the spy boss's controversial response to recent far-right unrest in Chemnitz as he had expressed doubts that migrants had truly been chased in the city and that he for one did not trust the videos put forward by Antifa (see hereunder).

On Sunday 26 August, one day after the events which led to the mass protests all over Germany, several far-right groups, including football hooligans, went on so-called pogroms or ‘refugee hunts’ and two asylum-seekers were attacked.

That day, images and videos emerged showing demonstrators chasing people and flinging bottles and fireworks at them.

FACTCHECK: Maaßen wouldn't be facing dismissal were it simply for questioning the video. However, Mr. Maassen, who heads the Federal Office for Constitutional Protection (BfV) (Germany's equivalent of the US’s FBI) stated afterward he "no reliable information about such hunts taking place".

He furthermore declared in the press that week that he doubted whether a video posted on social media by "Antifa Zeckenbiss" - meaning "anti-fascist tick bite" - really showed, as claimed, a "hunt in Chemnitz."

The BfV claimed that "there are always fake news and attempts at disinformation" on social media.

However, both Ms. Merkel’s CDU (center-right conservatives) and her SPD (center-left socialists) coalition partner has been handed reports that Mr. Maassen, in fact, supplied information to the right-wing AfD with whom he sympathizes more.

The news of the spy chief’s alleged preference for the rightwing political party is another blow for Ms. Merkel after it also emerged that several police officers had chosen not to intervene in the so-called ‘migrant hunts’ as they felt the protesters were right.

Some police officers have since been investigated for making ‘roman salutes’ and affiliating with far-right groups.
