That’s all folks. No longer will you be able to call yourself ‘deplorables’ and be proud of it. Whereas Google co-founder Mr Sergey Brin could be heard comparing Trump supporters to fascists over the weekend (see our related coverage) this one topped them all.
Former Vice-President Mr Joe Biden decided to back the Democratic Party’s effort for the upcoming Midterms and get the troops riled up. In the process, he referred to anyone who had dared to vote for current US President Donald Trump as the ‘dregs of society’.

Mr Biden stated: “This time they have an ally in the White House. They, not you. They are a small percentage of the American people. Virulent people. Some of them the dregs of society.”
This goes indeed a step further than the infamous comment Ms Hillary Clinton stated during her failed election campaign when she said: “To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic. You name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that. And he has lifted them up. He has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people — now 11 million.”

Ms Clinton, a few months after her election loss, was asked by reporters whether she thought the moment she uttered those words was the absolute turnaround as it made sure Mr Trump’s supporters would go out and vote. She said she didn’t think so.

As a European, I must admit my amazement at this name-calling by Mr Biden, certainly after events on ‘the old continent’ as of late.
The Swedish elections of last weekend meant that the BBC had put forward a map with voting percentages for nationalist parties of the last two years, showing that around 20% of all votes in the developed economies of Europe were now granted to parties that would, certainly by Mr Biden’s standards, would be called the same names.

In Eastern Europe (Hungary, Poland the Czech Republic, etc.) this percentage is far higher. European President Mr Jean-Claude Juncker will probably never speak of these voters as ‘deplorables’ or ‘dregs of society’.
Then again, it could be a blessing in disguise for the Republican Party as there is no stronger rallying cry for their base to go out in great numbers and reconfirm Mr Trump’s White House than this.
