David Hogg Raises Thousands For Billboard Featuring Trump's Tweets of Ted Cruz

David Hogg and other activists are working to stop Texas Senator Ted Cruz from winning re-election. They are raising thousands of dollars to purchase a mobile billboard that will feature some of President Trump’s tweets about his former Republican rival.

During the 2016 presidential election, Trump nicknamed Cruz “Lyin’ Ted,” appeared to make fun of Cruz’s wife’s appearance and even lent support to a conspiracy theory suggesting Cruz's Cuban-born father had a hand in President John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Cruz responded by calling Trump "a sniveling coward," ''a pathological liar" and "a serial philanderer."

"So many wonderful selections to choose from…Thank you @POTUS,” Hogg tweeted showing screenshots of Trump’s tweets attacking the Texas senator.

David Hogg asked if someone in Texas could put up a 2016 tweet from Trump which asked, “Why would the people of Texas support Ted Cruz when he has accomplished absolutely nothing for them. He is another all talk, no action pol!”

USA Latinx raised nearly $10,000 in one day for the effort to put the message on a mobile billboard.

"This is not an endorsement of the campaign for O'Rourke,” said Antonio Arellano, a political activist.

The GoFundMe page said this was a joint effort initiated by Arellano.

"Texans want to take people for their word and hold them accountable for that. And we also like to believe people the first time they show us who they truly are," he said.

There have always been negative ads and back and forth bickering during elections. This isn’t anything new. Barack Obama ran the most relentlessly negative campaign in history. In fact, 97% of the Obama campaign’s advertising consisted of attacks on Mitt Romney.

Hogg is just trying to stay in the spotlight.

The Harris County Republican Party released a statement saying, “This tweet billboard is a silly attempt to distract voters from learning the truth about the closet radical Robert O'Rourke, this year's left-wing statewide Democrat candidate. Voters know Ted Cruz is a strong fighter who keeps his promises and delivers real relief for Texans, including Harvey relief, tax cuts, and principled judges our country needs. Voters know that, despite what was said in the heat of another campaign, Ted Cruz fights and wins for real Texans every day in Washington.”
