The US Ambassador to the Netherlands, Mr. Pete Hoekstra, made it known that the two victims of the stabbing attack in Amsterdam’s Central Station yesterday are US citizens. As we explained in our related coverage earlier today, the perpetrator was a 19-year-old Afghan refugee who stayed in Germany.
He was shot shortly after his attack but is not in a life-threatening condition. Dutch police by now admit that it was a possible terror attack.

On the picture, you can see two police officers aiming their guns at the 19-year-old Afghan in front of the Hema shop underground the train station. The youngster, in jeans and a sweatshirt, had stabbed two American tourists shortly before. They are both still in the hospital.

Mr. Richard Snelders, who owns a flower shop at the Central Station, explained that he saw the deed: “It all happened quite fast. There was a man lying on the ground, bleeding, probably had been stabbed. Another person was bleeding a bit further. Everyone was screaming.”

“On the other end of the hall, I saw the young perpetrator. The police pointed their guns at him and said ‘liggen blijven’ (stay down). The hall was emptied very quickly. I immediately assumed it was a terror attack.”
Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema’s office confirmed: “We know that both victims were American citizens visiting Amsterdam. We hope they both recover.”
The US Ambassador to the Netherlands, Mr. Pete Hoekstra confirmed their nationality in his statement: “I want to express my support to those who were attacked at Amsterdam Centraal Station yesterday. We are aware that both victims were U.S. citizens visiting the Netherlands and have been in touch with them or their families.”
