Just over 50 years ago, on June 8, 1967, the USS Liberty was struck by an Isreali torpedo. The Liberty was an unarmed naval research ship. 34 US military personnel died in the attack with another 171 wounded. It is believed that Lydon Baines Johnson may have signed off on the order that was carried out, knowingly, by Israel in order to help launch US intervention in the Six Days War.
The event is and has been a controversial and often unmentioned, point in US history.

"The question of if and when Israeli forces became aware they were killing Americans has proved a point of particular contention in the on-again, off-again public debate that has simmered over the last half a century. The Navy Court of Inquiry’s investigation proceedings following the incident were held in closed sessions, and the survivors who had been on board received gag orders forbidding them to ever talk about what they endured that day."
If you read through most news sources from the US, you'll see more and more like that making it sound like Israel knowingly firing on the ship is conjecture. However, if you read Ha'aretz (one of the most widely read Israeli newspapers in the world) reports how Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Dayan "personally ordered the attack on the ship" despite one of his generals responding that "This is pure murder."

With all the above being "undisputed" according to Ha'aretz, how some people still doubt that the veracity of this war crime is mindboggling.
