In the London of Mayor Sadiq Khan, the public knows that the police is quite powerless and needs to be seen acting ‘with restraint’ as some crime is ‘part and parcel’ of living in a metropolitan city, to paraphrase the leftwing Labour mayor.
However, the video showing the moment that a group of bystanders attacks two police officers who try and pin down a suspect on the floor of a McDonald's might be taking that understanding a tad too far.

The footage was filmed in the McDonalds restaurant in Hackney, east London at 10.40 pm local time Monday night.
As two police officers try to pin down a suspect, one of the officers starts raising a weapon above the suspect's head. At this moment, another person can be heard saying: “They're going to kill him” which is when members of the group start pounding and kicking the police.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Staff at the restaurant had used the panic alarm and reported that a man was fighting with customers. Two response officers attended and detained the man concerned. The officers were then confronted with a hostile crowd some of whom assaulted the officers.”
“Both officers were later treated for injuries; one for an ankle injury and the other for cuts to his face. Neither officer has reported sick.”
The events took place during the last day of the Notting Hill carnival festival in London, which so far saw some 370 arrests.

London police detained 156 people on drugs offences, 69 on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and nine on suspicion of sexual offences. Among the items seized were knives, a metal pole and a taser.

And in case you are wondering, the balloons everyone is chewing on are filled with helium or some other hallucinating chemical, whatever is your preference. This is the newest method of not getting caught with drugs in London.
