The hits just keep on coming for German Chancellor Ms Angela Merkel these days. After two days of unrest in the east German city of Chemnitz, some local councilor in Wiesbaden must by now regret his decision to allow a 4-meter high gold statue of Turkish President Erdogan to be unveiled in a park for a local art fair. The timing seems quite unfortunate.

The ‘Kunstfestival’ known as the “Wiesbaden Biennale” features the massive gold statue as one of its centerpieces. The title of the art fair is “Bad News.“

Diese Aktion unter dem Deckmantel der Kunst ist eine Bankrotterklärung des bürgerlichen Kulturbetriebs. Diese „Provokation“ ist in ihrem Kern nicht fortschrittlich, sondern reaktionär. The Turkish diaspora in Germany was quick to go and take photographs with their favorite president whilst local Germans have, on the first night already, taken the opportunity to spray the statue with graffiti reading ‘Turkish Hitler’ and ‘Fuck You’.

The mayor of Wiesbaden, social democrat Mr Sven Gerich was quick to point out that in the German press today that the statue was discussed extensively before authorization was given.

This is not the first spat of anger over a depiction of Turkish President Erdogan at a German art fair.

Back in February of this year Mr Erdogan’s supporters, there are about 5 million Turks living in Germany, demanded that the museum who had dared to hang a picture of their president with a banana stuck in his ass.

That image by artist Thomas Baumgärtel entitled "Turkish dictator," was subsequently taken down from the “Art Karlsruhe fair” after protests by the Turks.
