The European Commission in Brussels, Belgium called for an urgent meeting after both the Italian Deputy Prime Minister Mr Luigi Di Maio and the Italian Interior Minister Mr Matteo Salvini, the de facto populist rulers of the fourth largest economy in Europe, declared that their government would suspend funding to the EU unless other member states agreed to take in migrants being held on a coastguard ship in Sicily, the Diciotti (see our related coverage).

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Italy&#39;s deputy prime minister has threatened to pull the country&#39;s EU funding if the bloc does not come to the aid of 150 migrants stranded aboard an Italian coastguard ship <a href="https://t.co/PrLCGXhx2n">https://t.co/PrLCGXhx2n</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Diciotti?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#Diciotti</a></p>&mdash; AFP news agency (@AFP) <a href="https://twitter.com/AFP/status/1032968269249093634?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 24, 2018</a></blockquote>

Mr Di Maio clearly stated: “If tomorrow nothing comes out of a European Commission meeting on redistributing migrants from the Diciotti ship, the 5-Star and I will not be willing to give €20 billion each year to the EU.”

The leader of the Five-Star Movement, Mr Di Maio, claims that when it comes to this matter, he mostly agrees with Mr Salvini’s hardline position that the migrants should stay on the ship until there is an agreement in the EU.

Mr Salvini meanwhile accuses fellow EU states of not following up on their responsibilities.

He stated that Germany and Spain are reneging an agreement to take migrants: “Why should we trust them this time? Before asking for the disembarkation of the Diciotti, Europe should give us explanations. I’m not backing down.”

<a href="https://t.co/2cJs8jOtpe">pic.twitter.com/2cJs8jOtpe</a></p>&mdash; Matteo Salvini (@matteosalvinimi) <a href="https://twitter.com/matteosalvinimi/status/1031875163640475649?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 21, 2018</a></blockquote>

<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

“I have broad shoulders. I think the majority of Italians agree with me. Either Europe begins to seriously defend its borders and shares the relocation of immigrants, or we will start taking them back to the port that they left.”

It would appear a majority of Italians agree with the populist leaders as opinion polls showed that Mr Salvini’s Lega Nord party gained another 10% and is now level with the populist Five Star Movement (M5S) with which it has formed a government.

343946, Damned straight. Use every dark trick in the book to locate and permanently stop the smugglers. Examples must be made. And, yes, tow the ships out to sea and use them for live-fire military exercises.
