Disgraced celebrity Mr Matt Lauer (who was dismissed from his job hosting NBC's Today Show over sexual misconduct allegations) is now being blamed on New Zealand’s social media for the ban on foreigners buying real estate.
Last week, responding to the crazy pricing they were witnessing from foreigners swooping in to purchase New Zealand real estate, the leftwing government of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern voted to bar most non-citizens from investing in homes.

That vote remarkably came three weeks after Mr Lauer (pictured with Harvey Weinstein) appeared in an interview on Radio New Zealand where he defended his ownership of Hunter Valley Station, a 27,000-acre sheep and cattle ranch on a mountain lake that can only be reached by a dirt road and now denies the public access to a believed wilderness area.

Radio New Zealand presenter Mr John Campbell stated: “Isn’t it actually that you want to control this beautiful piece of land?”
“Why the hell should Matt Lauer have access to this land when we Kiwis have to jump through hoops to get onto it?”
A caller joined into the discussion, stating: “Matt Lauer is the poster child for the kind of absentee foreign owners the Kiwis don’t want. But he is just one of thousands.”

Mr Lauer responded to the criticism, which he said was because of the timing of the sexual assault allegations he received, which he named as a ‘difficult time’: "This easement that's been proposed is being proposed to solve a problem that does not exist, and that's the misinformation that's out there and it's out there on purpose.”
"Show me the logs of the people, of Walking Access Commission and other people, of all the people who they say have been denied? They don't exist."
The New Zealand government over the summer finished an investigation of whether Mr Lauer was “of good character” (as is required in his lease agreement under New Zealand law) and decided he could keep the ranch, to the outrage of many.
A government spokeswoman said, “Mr. Lauer has not been charged with any offense, nor convicted, and the evidence does not establish that Mr. Lauer is unfit to continue to hold the asset.”
Today, as many Kiwis state they were hoping to sell their home and can’t anymore, angry voices on social media say this is because of Mr Lauer’s actions.
