Mother: 'I Couldn't Save Him' - Body of 3-Year-Old Found in Desert Compound Identified

'They took my life': the first wife of Muslim polygamist speaks out after body found buried in the desert is confirmed to be her disabled three-year-old 'miracle' son.

<div style="width:100%;text-align:center;margin:0 auto;"><iframe width="360" height="202" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9G058SC3idY" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>

Hakima Ramzi, the first wife of a Muslim polygamist whose disabled son disappeared a year ago has spoken about her heartbreak. Her son’s body was found near her husband's 'terrorist training camp' in New Mexico.

Ramzi said the last time she'd seen her little son, Abdul-Ghani Wahhaj, was when her husband Siraj Ibn Wahhaj offered to take him to the park in 2017.

Ramzi was working with detectives to find her son. She was devastated when she learned that authorities had found the skeletal remains of a child in her husband's training compound northeast of Amalia, New Mexico. Eleven starving children and five Muslim adults were also discovered.

Police haven’t released an official identification but the boy's grandfather, Imam Wahhaj Siraj, has already confirmed the child was Abdul-Ghani.

<div style="width:100%;text-align:center;margin:0 auto;"><iframe width="360" height="202" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/u_Of5-1a5rg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>

'They took my life,' Ramzi said, breaking down in tears during an emotional interview Thursday with Channel 2 Action News. 'I wasn't able to save my son, to save his life.'

Siraj Ibn Wahhaj, 39, faces eleven counts of child cruelty. In court filings, he is also accused of grooming the kids to become school shooters.

Wahhaj's brother-in-law Lucas Allen Morton, sisters Hujrah Wahhaj and Subhannah Wahhaj and Jany Leveille, who was also staying at the camp, face similar charges.

Jany Leveille is a second wife, taken by Wahhaj under an interpretation of Islam which allows polygamy.

Ramzi said the last time she'd seen her son was on November 29. Her husband told her he was taking Abdul-Ghani to the park. He never returned.

'I call him many times. I call and call and call him many times. He didn't pick up the phone. He didn't, every time. He didn't pick up the phone,' Ramzi said.

'I get scared. My heart just broke. I get worried. I don't know. I lost control of myself.'

New Mexico's chief medical investigator, Kurt Nolte, said the delay in positive identification was due to the body's advanced state of decomposition.

Shariyf Muhammad, attorney and family friend, said Ramzi was struggling to come to terms with what her husband had done.

'She's having a very hard time right now,' they said. 'Hakima is a mother whose son has been missing for nine months and she has gone through every range of emotion from anger to sadness to despair to helplessness to fear, anxiety and a desire for revenge.'

'I think this has been mischaracterized as a custody battle because it's been reported that he 'took the child.' But they were married, and are still married although he chose to estrange himself by his actions.

'Hakima told us, 'He told me he was taking Abdul-Ghani to the park for a little while.' She had no reason to think any different.'

As far as Ramzi knew, Muhammad explained, her 15-year-marriage to Ibn Wahhaj, 39, who took the child on December 1 last year, was 'uneventful.'

Siraj Wahhaj's father said that his son practiced polygamy and was also married to Leveille.

Ramzi conceded that looking back, her husband had been 'acting differently' prior to her husband's disappearance.

'He acted like different. Yeah, because I have been married to him for 15 years, almost 15 years. I never got any problem with him,' Ramzi said.

Her attorney said: 'With hindsight, knowing the outcome, perhaps she might have read into things differently but there was nothing that set off red flags for her.'

Ramzi filed a missing persons report in June, she said authorities told her of the compound in New Mexico.

She was hopeful that she'd be reunited with Abdul-Ghani.

But she didn't see him in any of the surveillance pictures taken by the FBI.

Then the grisly discovery of child remains was found near the training camp.

'I want justice. I want justice,' Ramzi said.

Siraj Wahhaj's father said his son had cut himself off from the family.

'This is surprising, especially in the Muslim faith, because family ties are very important,' he said. 'They have cut ties not only with me but with their brothers and sisters and mothers, the whole community.'

The elder Wahhaj said he wanted to understand what investigators meant when describing the camp as extremist but he would accept it if they could show him facts.

He is also convinced the boy's remains in the desert are his grandson's. He stated that another one of his grandchildren had spoken about the boy being buried on the land.

It has since emerged that Ibn Wahhaj told Ramz that he was going to perform an 'exorcism' on the child whom he thought was 'possessed by evil.'

Abdul-Ghani suffered from disabilities. He had seizures and needed medication and special care. Abdul Ghani's fourth birthday was on Monday.

He said, 'He had health circumstances he was dealing with but to Hakima he was her 'miracle baby'.

'She had tried so long to conceive before she finally had him and so he was, at least in her eyes, the best thing ever. He was perfect.

'She didn't feel that he was in any way deprived of enjoying life. He was having a good life and she thought they were having a good life together.'

Now, Muhammad said, she is 'trying to navigate the criminal justice system' with his help and that of fellow attorney M Khurran Baig of The Baig Firm in Norcross, Georgia.

Authorities entered the camp on Friday. The camp was established by Ibn Wahhaj, brother-in-law Lucas Morton, 40, sisters Hujrah, 38, and Subhanah Wahhaj, 35, and second wife Jany Leveille, 35.

The FBI had been monitoring the camp for some time but Taos County officers moved in after intercepting a message from one inside the camp asking for help, saying 'we are starving.'

Muhammad said that Ramzi was 'shocked' by prosecutors' assertions that her husband had been training the children - aged between 1 and 15 - to commit mass school shootings.

Neighboring landowners told about hearing gunshots coming from the compound. Investigators found evidence of target practice.

Ibn Wahhaj was heavily armed with an AR-15, 30 rounds of ammunition and four pistols.

Loaded firearms were within easy reach of the children.

Muhammad said, 'There was nothing in her relationship with Ibn Wahhaj that led Hakima to think he was planning something of that nature. She was shocked by the reports as you can imagine.'

Ramzi is anticipating being questioned by investigators in both Clayton County, Georgia where she reported her son missing and Taos County, New Mexico

Ibn Wahhaj and the other adults in the camp are awaiting trial on charges including multiple counts of child abuse.

He said, 'We are just waiting for investigators to approach her. They haven't as yet but she expects to be contacted as they continue their investigations.

'Right now her focus is just trying to get through this next stage, the identification of the remains found in the camp.

'She's having to come to terms with the prospect of what we all suspect will be confirmation of our worst fears.'
