Comedian Kathy Griffin, together with her attorney, Lisa Bloom, addressed the media following the tremendous backlash she received from the public and both ends of the political spectrum from an unusual consensus that the joke she pulled at the expense of President Donald Trump was sick, disgusting and vile. Griffin posed with a decapitated, bloodied mockup of the President’s head.
Griffin told the press that the apology she issued on Twitter “absolutely stands” but emphasized that she is “not afraid of Donald Trump.”
Griffin next went on an attack mode against the President anew. She said: “He’s a bully. I’ve dealt with older, white guys trying to keep me down my whole life, my whole career. I am a woman in a very male-dominated field. I love what I do, I love making people laugh more than anything in the world.”
Griffin, however, admitted that she made mistakes about the photo shoot. She said: "I make mistakes, I'm an out-there comedian, I'm an in-your-face comedian," she continued. "But I just wanted to say, 'If you don't stand up, you get run over.'"
The comedian made graver claims, however, including supposed harassment from the first family and the government. She accused the first family of “trying to ruin my life forever.” She also claimed of receiving death threats and of being investigated by the Secret Service.
Griffin also addressed the President directly, implying that she is “under attack”. Facing the cameras, she said: “The Donald, it's me, Kathy," she said. "I'm teasing the president because this is America and you shouldn't have to die for it."
She also claimed that the President is going to come after her, but that “he picked the wrong redhead.”
Griffin then took questions from the media and uncharacteristically broke down. While crying, she claimed: "I don't think I'll have a career after this. I'm going to be honest, he broke me," "I'm broken. I'm 56 years old, I'm 110 pounds wet. I've had everybody turn on me and I just wanna make people laugh. That's all I wanna do. So I screwed up."
Both the President and first lady condemned Griffin’s joke. Trump tweeted: "Kathy Griffin should be ashamed of herself," he wrote. "My children, especially my 11-year old-son, Barron, are having a hard time with this. Sick!"
First lady Melania Trump also released a statement on the photo controversy. She said: "As a mother, a wife, and a human being, that photo is very disturbing. When you consider some of the atrocities happening in the world today, a photo opportunity like this is simply wrong and makes you wonder about the mental health of the person who did it."
Griffin has been fired from her gig for CNN’s New Year’s Eve special due to the backlash. Trump supporters have also called on other events and sponsors getting the comedian to dump the comic.
Griffin may have shown her ‘dramatic’ side and shed tears during the meeting with the press but in 2016 she showed her vile self when she boasted that she would go after Trump’s 11-year-old son Barron and would be happy to “bring him down.”
