The twist is that these media groups seem to be doing it to themselves.

The term originates from the 1938 stage play Gas Light in which a woman's perception of reality is destroyed.
Trump didn't make up the term "fake news" you silly billy. CNN made it up to discredit small youtubers and bloggers who were gaining popularity and sucking ad revenue from the Government Approved Networks. The term just happened to reverse and gain traction, backfiring against the crony networks.
