French polling firm Ipsos has released it’s monthly ‘what worries the world’ report for July 2018 (link to report in source) statistics and for the normally quiet Scandinavian nation Sweden, which is faced with elections in a month from now, there are a few interesting statistics to notice.
If you look at the top 10 worldwide of countries where people worry most about crime and violence, the usual suspects like Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, Turkey, and Malaysia are all there, and then you spot a single well developed European nation smack in the middle of it. Yes, Sweden made the top 5 of countries where citizens worry as much about crime as in ….India. Well no, that’s untrue. Indians worry much less about it in fact, they only made place 11.

The monthly poll examined citizens’ opinions on issues ranging from unemployment, poverty, crime and violence, financial and political corruption, as well as healthcare issues.

Another startling statistic for Sweden shows that 73% of the blonde northerners think their country is headed in the wrong direction and in the top of countries which worry most about immigration Sweden even made the top three worldwide.

With this data in hand, it is of course not very surprising that the right-wing populist Sweden Democrats are polling at record high numbers, with the latest Sentio poll showing them now leading the ruling Social Democrats.
Their surge in support comes after the Sweden Democrats said they wanted to stop the arrival of the 163,000 asylum-seekers which have arrived since 2015 during the refugee crisis (Sweden has a total population of 10 million).
