For the past two weeks, France had been caught up in the Alexandre Benalla affair (the incident where the French President’s bodyguard helped police a bit too harshly and violently beat up some protesters near the Elysée) and was awaiting the outcome of a no-confidence vote with eagerness.

However, media attention has now switched to the attack on 22-year-old architecture student Miss Marie Laguerre, a sexual assault victim whose situation has gone viral and set (mostly female) tongues wagging once again about the situations women have to endure in the French capital.

In a security video from the Parisian terrace that she passed, she can be seen walking in a summery dress. A man shouts something at her and she shouts something back. He then throws an ashtray at her, to the surprise of the others on the terrace enjoying a summer drink. Marie turns back to confront the man who then slaps her hard in the face.

She explained that the man gave her a ‘sexy compliment’ and that it wasn’t the first time that day; So, she responded with ‘ta geule’ or shut up, to which the unidentified individual launched the ashtray at her.

Miss Laguerre, who has since filed an official complaint with the Parisian police shared the video which the café gave her on social media and explained what happened. She wrote that: "because I responded to his harassment, a man hit me in the street, in the middle of the day, in front of dozens of witnesses. Unacceptable. Stop street harassment."

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en-gb"><p lang="en" dir="ltr"><a href="https://twitter.com/prefpolice?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@prefpolice</a> Hope this helps you with the assault against Marie Laguerre. <a href="https://t.co/8JbhREEkYJ">pic.twitter.com/8JbhREEkYJ</a></p>&mdash; Anthony Castelluci (@ACastelluci) <a href="https://twitter.com/ACastelluci/status/1023971173925834764?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">30 July 2018</a></blockquote>

The video made the front page of one of Paris’s biggest newspapers, Le Parisien, with a headline that read: "filmed proof."

France's equality minister, Ms. Marlene Schiappa, said she would work with police to make sure the individual is prosecuted to the full force of the law. Speaking to the press when asked for a reaction, she stated: "What's at stake is serious, it's the freedom of women to move about in freedom in public."
