A 67-year-old UK woman was taken to hospital when a beach parasol impaled her leg while she was reading on a New Jersey beach.

Ms Margaret Reynolds, who hails from London, had to be cut free from the parasol in her leg with bolt cutters, according to the first responders. The incident took place on Monday afternoon at the beach near Seaside Heights.

Ms Donna Sellmann, a spokeswoman for Jersey Shore University Medical center said that Ms Reynolds was in good condition as of Tuesday morning and recuperating before she can be flown back to the UK.

Ms Reynolds confirmed she would not be pressing charges: “It was a beautiful day and a gust of wind blew the umbrella."

"It was just an accident.”

Instagram user RickyZ, who posted pictures of the accident, said: “This lady had an umbrella go through her leg five feet away from me!”.

“There was a strong gust of wind, there were a couple umbrellas flying. One of the corners of a random one went through her leg! That could have been me!”

Meanwhile other beachgoers said the lifeguard on scene should have intervened sooner, with one man claiming: “The lifeguard should have been the one to tell people to take their umbrellas down, it’s too windy.”

“You’re not putting it two feet into gravel, it’s sand – what the hell is holding it down.”

Friendly reminder to anyone who’ll be spending their summer on the same beach as myself in the coming weeks: please make sure your parasols are locked into the sand!
