With her recent announcement of a political comeback of sort through the launch of the PAC “Onward Together” targeting to “resist” Trump and help elect Democrats in Congress, expect Hillary Clinton to be more active and visible in the public scene. She is expected in one event, but one group is resisting her presence in it.
Hillary Clinton has been invited to serve as Class of 2017 commencement speaker at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn, New York on June 8. She will also be awarded an honorary degree there. But Hillary’s presence in the graduation ceremonies has been met by protests from members of the Haitian community. They are asking the college’s president, Rudy Crew, to cancel the school’s invitation to Clinton.
The Clintons are particularly not popular with many Haitians who know and remember so well what they did to the poor country when it suffered a massive killer earthquake in 2010 that devastated the country and its people. In supposed rescue, relief and rehabilitation response to the humanitarian crisis facing Haiti then, the UN and many other international NGOs flocked to Haiti to help in the recovery efforts. Unfortunately, their interventions that were supposedly meant to help resulted to some unfortunate matters. In 2011, UN Peacekeepers caused a massive cholera outbreak that killed at least 9,500 people and caused sickness to 800,000 other people. Bill Clinton happened to be serving as the United Nations Special Envoy to the UN then while Hilary served as Secretary of State.
The Clintons have been widely accused of mismanaging the massive donations that poured on Haiti following the huge disaster. They are also accused of exploiting the crisis and using their positions and the family-run Clinton Foundation to personally benefit from the relief and recovery efforts being done for Haiti at that time. There were allegations of conflict of interest cases where Bill and Hillary Clinton supposedly allowed their respective brothers to benefit from the recovery efforts in the devastated country.
Many Haitians also blame the Clintons for their complicity in helping their ally Michel Mertelly win in 2010. He stepped down last year, but not after massive allegations of corruption.
Komokoda, the Haitian group protesting Hillary’s speech has said that every time the Clintons get in a bind, they always run to the black community to whitewash their tarnished image. The group said such is true from the time Bill Clinton was impeached for lying under oath during the Monica Lewinsky affair all the way to Hillary’s private email server scandal. Komokoda is appealing to their school not to allow Hillary to also exploit Medger Evers’ students the way she and Bill, along with their family, have exploited Haitians.
