Having a movie about the US government separating a Mexican father from his child as part of a plan to crack down on illegal border crossings come out at the same time that the US’s southern neighbor is ready to head into an election weekend, seems like a golden opportunity to say the least.

In ‘Sicario 2: day of the soldado’, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro reprise their roles and go deep underground into the Mexican drug cartel gangs that are wreaking havoc on the US border.

I must admit being biased as to this follow-up to the fabulous 2015 ‘Sicario’ being a big fan of all things directed by Dennis Villeneuve, even though this one was directed by Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima, known for dark an gritty mafia movies like ‘Gomorra’ and ‘Suburra’.

Divide and Conquer is what Caesar already advised his generals in olden times and thus in order to get the border cartels to start a war against each other, Josh Brolin, who reprises his role from the first movie as government agent Matt Graver, gets his captured operative Alejandro (played by Benicio del Toro) to kidnap the daughter of one of the cartel kingpins so the US can blame it on the other.

However, when the girl is deemed collateral damage and Alejandro is ordered to kill her, her fate will come in between the two main protagonists as they start to question everything they are fighting for.
