For months on end, the Spanish public was in the midst of the horror trial of the so-called ‘Wolf Pack’ of Pamplona (la manada), in which a group of five young men gang-raped a young woman in the early hours of the morning during the San Firmin festival in Pamplona and then bragged about it on a Whatsapp group called the ‘Wolf Pack’ and uploaded videos of their actions.

The incident has been the cause for Spain’s own #MeToo movement as many protests emerged in major cities after a trial failed to convict them for rape, rather giving them a light penalty for sexual assault.

Yesterday, the Spanish shock became even greater when four men and a boy were detained by Spanish police over a sexual assault on a girl at the tourist resort of Maspalomas on the island of Gran Canaria.

The devil is in the details as the group had called themselves "la nueva manada" (the new wolf pack), thus directly linking (and glorifying) their own actions to the case that caused the first mass protests.

Their attack on a young girl were done one day after the original ‘Wolf Pack’ was released from jail last week (see our related coverage).

Furthermore, the suspects on the island of Gran Canaria have filmed their assault on at least one mobile phone. Investigators were trying to find out if they had drugged the girl in advance.

The government of Mr Pedro Sanchez claimed that he wouldn’t interfere in the judicial process, but warned the courts that their last decision had "aroused social alarm."
