World Cup - Australia’s Socceroos Hope For Divine Intervention (Video)

Australians are hoping for a miracle tonight as their team, known locally as the ‘Socceroos’, are up against Peru which is already eliminated. The standing in their group is such that France and Denmark will both be qualified with a draw, and Australia needs to have a win with a big goal difference as well as a loss for Denmark in order to still progress to the knock-out stage. Otherwise, it’s all over.

Australians are stocking up on beer and chips to watch a match starting around midnight local time.

For this reason, Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove, who had an audience with the Argentinian-born Pope at the Vatican yesterday, presented him with an Australian jersey with "Holy Father" on the back.

Pope Francis jokingly asked: "Do I have to put it on now?"

A question to which Mr. Cosgrove replied: "No, no, no, just when you're watching the game."

It, of course, remains to be seen whether Pope Francis will indeed be cheering for Australia in a few hours as divine intervention is needed for his own countrymen, Argentina, in the first place.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina is up against Nigeria and desperately need a win to stay in the tournament tonight. Given that Pope Francis is supporter of a local Argentinean team in the first place, our guess is his heart might be sold already.

In the other game in Australia’s group tonight, Iceland takes on Croatia.
